The Sunflowers
![]() |
This is one of several sunflowers that grew on their
own from the seed I give to the birds. I had huge ones and this smaller
version that is still putting out flowers. The large ones have since
died after the birds picked them to death, and the smaller one usually has
three or four goldfinch and cardinals picking at the seeds. They seem
to plant themselves every year. In 2003 we dug up about 20 plants starting
to grow around the ponds edge and replanted them along the fence. After
a week of looking like death they all came back and have bloomed.
Hopefully, that's where they'll grow from now on. They would
get so big I could hardly see my pond. |

This was taken just as the bird started to peck at the large sunflower. |
This was taken after they'd just about cleaned it out. |
As the seeds were stripped and the plants started
to die and look really ugly, I cut the heads off a dropped them on the ground
so the birds could continue to feed off them. Here a cardinal pair
are making the most of it. |
Can you spot the goldfinch pecking away at a small sunflower? |
